Purpose + Belonging Mindsets
Scott Barry Kaufman, author, cognitive scientist, and humanistic psychologist, conceptualizes one’s journey through life as a boat. One’s security needs of safety, connection and self-esteem work together to provide stability. Growth results from exploration, love and purpose and is represented in the sails atop the boat. Dr. Kaufman states: “Transcendence, which rests on a secure foundation of both security and growth, is a perspective in which we can view our whole being from a higher vantage point with acceptance, wisdom, and a sense of connectedness with the rest of humanity.”
Drawing on Dr. Kaufman’s work, Fullerton College’s Mindful Growth Initiative provides opportunities for students to develop security and growth by fostering connections and belonging while also guiding them to discover and value exploration, love and purpose in order to experience meaningful and enriching lives.
